Hi everyone,

Hope you all enjoyed last week’s conversation. And I hope to see you all again next week when we will be talking about a topic that is quite controversial and at the centre  of heated debates/discussions in the media. The topic is the current housing market crisis in Spain (‘la vivienda’).

Some of the questions we will be asking will include:

  • To what extent is the current system (laws, rules and regulations) that governs the purchase, use and sale of property in Spain fair?

  • Does everyone have equal access to the housing (property) market?

  • Should property owners have complete freedom to do whatever they like with their properties (buying, selling, conversions, rent increases, etc.)?

  • What is the most serious problem in Salamanca/Spain at the moment concerning the property market?

One of the stories currently making the headlines in the media is the plight of a woman called ‘Marie-Carmen’, a tenant living in a housing complex in Madrid. Also, all the major tv news channels are covering mass demonstrations in the streets everywhere in Spain. There is even a demand for a general strike to be held throughout Spain to highlight the problems currently facing the housing market in Spain.

  • So are there any - quick and easy - solutions?

  • Are the protesters justified in their discontent with the current situation?

  • What are the root problems of the current housing crisis?

  • How do we balance individual freedom (for property owners) and government intervention (to force change and help those at the lower end of the disposable income scale/spectrum)?

So lots to talk about!

See you all soon.

Richard
